The United States District Judge presiding over all of the federal testosterone drug lawsuits has appointed 33 attorneys to serve in a variety of capacities.

Earlier this summer, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) made the decision to establish coordinated proceedings in federal court for all lawsuits filed in relation to the negative impact of testosterone replacement therapy, regardless of the drug manufacturer or the type of medication.

Lawsuits involving at least six pharmaceutical companies have been centralized in the Eastern District of Illinois.

All of the complaints are the same, involving allegations that the manufacturers neglected to warn about the risk of side effects such as pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, stroke, heart attacks, and other injuries.

Some of the medications associated with the lawsuit include Depo-Testosterone, Androderm, Axiron, Testim, and Androgel.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made a big decision, now requiring manufacturers to include a general warning on the label of all approved testosterone products stating the risk of developing blood clots. This is meant to warn users about the link between blood clots and testosterone replacement therapy.

Before this change, the risk of blood clots was already included on the label due to the risk of developing these as the result of polycythemia, a problem that can occur with the use of testosterone treatment. However, recent reports of venous blood clots, not related to polycythemia, has prompted the FDA to require a change to the way these drugs are labeled.

Abbott Laboratories and AbbVie are dealing with lawsuits combined in Chicago over claims the companies hid the risks of using AndroGel, a testosterone replacement drug.

Abbott Laboratories, as well as its AbbVie spin-off, are both located in Chicago and are already facing a large number of related suits there.

The decision to consolidate the lawsuits was a big one and came after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it will re-examine the safety of testosterone replacement drugs, such as AndroGel, after studies showed an increased risk of health concerns, including stroke and heart attack.

The consolidation will pull together lawsuits against all makers of testosterone-replacement pills. Other companies include Pfizer and Actavis.

On January 31 the Federal Drug Administration announced that they would open an investigation to research cardiovascular complications resulting from approved FDA products for use with low testosterone levels.  Initial reports have revealed serious heart side effects including but not limited to: heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism and death.

These revelations were the result of an observational study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in November, 2013. It was found that older men with underlying heart conditions were at a 30% increased risk of heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism and death.  An FDA alert suggests that there is a 50% increase in risk for those with heart conditions who undergo testosterone therapy.

FDA Investigates Potentially Deadly Side Effects of Testosterone Therapy Drugs

The Food and Drug Administration has decided to reassess the safety of testosterone therapy after these recent findings.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating the risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in men taking FDA-approved testosterone products. We have been monitoring this risk and decided to reassess this safety issue based on the recent publication of two separate studies that each suggested an increased risk of cardiovascular events among groups of men prescribed testosterone therapy. We are providing this alert while we continue to evaluate the information from these studies and other available data, and will communicate our final conclusions and recommendations when the evaluation is complete.
